Steel Buildings Structural Elements

Steel Buildings – Structural Framework Design

In terms of structural framework design, steel structures can be predominantly divided into three general categories:

  • Framed Structures – Are steel structures where elements may consist of tension members, columns, beams, and members under combined bending and axial load. A multistory building, though three-dimensional, is also considered to be a series of plane frames. Industrial buildings or one-story buildings are generally framed structures.

  • Fireproofing -  Although the steel members are incombustible but their strength is greatly reduced during disastrous fires.   • Fracture – Another material defect, fracture also occurs under stress concentration. To avoid such structural failures, it is important to assess the material on the basis of fracture toughness. At times, the lack of communication and exchange of information result in extra costs and expense.

  • Avoiding Blind Assumptions: Sometimes one tends to make certain blind assumptions about the design and the structural frames. Like one may assume that the lightest section building frame is the cheapest, contrarily such a frame consists of a large number of different shapes and sizes.
