Metal Roofing for Homes – Now is the Time!

Monday, August 24th, 2009

Steel buildings have evolved out to be big winners in the recent times. Steel roofs, useful building accessories, have also been a hot topic among investors for quite a while now. People are waking up to the various benefits of metal roofs and showing inclination toward them.

Credited for their sustainable and versatile character, steel roofing definitely is proving out to be the order of the day. There is an upsurge in demand for metal roofing installation as they are light, strong, durable and non-combustible.

Steel roofs – They are here to stay

The fact that they are sustainable, recyclable and are available in various shapes, styles and colors make steel roof systems all the more popular among residential building owners. Residential metal building roofs do not crack, shrink, or react to the climatic effects/changes. They are light weight and hence are portable. You can save your power bills tremendously because these roofs are energy-efficient.

Another striking feature that makes steel roofs one of the most sought-after roofing systems is that they are fire-resistant. They can easily withstand tropical storms and crude hurricanes. Steel roofs are labor efficient since they can be installed over the existing roof. As compared to their counterparts, metal roofs can last for 50-100 years depending upon the level of maintenance carried out by the owner. Metal roofs can be used for conventional residential buildings as well.  Contrary to the common misconceptions, metal and steel roofs are installed over conventional buildings also and not just metal or steel buildings.

What are you waiting for? If you had been waiting for the right option of roofs to come along your way, here’s the perfect choice. Metal roofing, yes it is!

Prefabricated Steel Buildings Now Go Colored!

Monday, August 24th, 2009

Prefabricated steel buildings are now one level up, with the introduction of energy-efficient colors for their external beautification. Yes, these energy-efficient colors not only add charm to the exterior semblance of steel buildings, but also contribute in enhancing the energy-efficiency of these buildings.

These environment-friendly cool paints contain solar reflective pigments that play a crucial role in reflecting the infra red radiation that falls on the exposed exterior of the steel buildings. Due to this, most of the radiation gets reflected away allowing a considerably less portion to get into steel building interiors. This plays a significant role in curbing down the excessive heating of steel buildings especially during the blistering summer days.

Paints to prevent heating in Steel Building Interiors

These paints not only help in preventing the undue heating of steel building interiors, but also pave way for their energy efficiency, and help cut down the energy expenditures by a wide margin. Expenses on energy efficiency are reduced, with a significant decrease in the expenditure on cooling steel building interiors; approximately by 20%.

For maximum energy savings, we recommend that you go for a steel roof with the highest value of thermal emittance, coupled with the highest solar reflectance. Due to these features, a minimal amount of heat tends to enter into steel building structures, and hence proportionately less amount of air conditioning is required in lieu of lowering the heated temperature.

Steel buildings are all geared up to take us by pleasant surprises in the coming future! Cooling paints are just the beginning. Steel building accessories have a long way to go!

Is your Metal Building Roof Leaking?

Sunday, August 23rd, 2009

Metal or steel buildings roofs are directly exposed to the scorching heat and other vagaries of weather and climate, leaving them damaged quite easily. Getting a metal roof repaired can be troublesome if not handled in time. Fixing the leak right away is the best deal and the task begins with finding the inconspicuous source for the leak in the steel building roof.

In order to find the leak, you need to closely inspect your roof. Do not leave the areas that need utmost attention like the J-rail, the flashing around vents, pipes and skylights, the seams, rumble-buttons and the roof sealant.

How to patch the leak?

Once you’ve spotted the hole responsible for the leak, you shall need the following tools & materials:

  • a piece of galvanized metal
  • sheet metal screws
  • butyl tape
  • roof coating
  • caulk
  • flexibility putty knife

Remember that roof is an essential part of steel buildings and its maintenance is as significant as any other part of a metal building, may be more.

Following are certain steps that you should take note of in order to repair your metal building roof.

Steps to patch the hole:

  1. Clean the area scrapping off flakes or loosen the metal roof coating with flexible putty knife.
  2. Apply the butyl tape to the perimeter of the area that needs to be patched up.
  3. Cut a patch out of galvanized metal overlapping the hole, exactly above the butyl tape
  4. Pre-drill holes in the galvanized metal. Make sure, you don’t drill the trusses and to start with, you can place the screw every two inches and if it’s not tight enough, put a screw every one inch.
  5. Finally seal around the edges of the patch and the screws with caulk.
  6. When the caulk dries, cover it up with a roof coating.

Fixing up the leak as soon as you spot one is quite essential because if you don’t do that it might affect the the other aspects of your steel building like insulation. So, fix up your roof right away if you think it has a hole, starting with the close inspection of the metal building roof.

Steel Buildings: Perceptions and Misconceptions

Sunday, August 23rd, 2009

Steel advantage has become an oft-repeated thing for steel buildings. Unarguably, steel fabrications are becoming more popular because of their manifold advantages such as they are cost-effective, easier-to-erect, non-flammable, sturdy and strong to brave the environmental challenges like hurricanes and tornadoes, mold, rot and termite-resistant etc.

Despite of all the aforementioned advantages, steel buildings still encounter a few misconceptions based on common perceptions. Here, we make an effort to bust all the myths about steel buildings.

Busting the common Myths about Steel Buildings:

  • Steel buildings get easily struck by lightning: Most common of all, steel buildings are thought-to-be more likely to get struck by the lightning. This is NOT true. In fact, contrary to the common perception, these are much safer than wooden structural frames. This can be explained as in steel framing, there are multiple grounding points, these conduct the lightning, dissipating the energy, without any damage. It is for this reason only that some insurance companies give discount on steel structures, making it even more cost-effective.
  • Temperature Regulation is a troublesome task for steel buildings: Another misconception about steel buildings is that it is difficult to regulate temperature in these prefabricated steel buildings. However, in this case too, the opposite holds the true. It is much more easier to regulate temperature in steel buildings and in fact they are constructed to be more energy-efficient, reason they are being touted as ‘green buildings’. As compared to wooden frame buildings, steel buildings are more energy-efficient and can be insulated or appended with accessories to maintain temperatures.
  • Steel buildings lack the exterior beauty: Lastly, steel building are held to be not-that-beautiful or lacking innovation. Here, this might be true of earlier steel buildings but with latest innovations and architectural elements, steel buildings can be made to have the most beautiful exteriors. There are many steel buildings which are considered architectural marvels around the world.

These are just a few myths and misconceptions. However, since time immemorial popularity of any new innovation comes coupled with misconceptions, nonetheless in this particular case, CitySteelBuildings.com comes to your rescue!

Steel Buildings – Building a Sustainable and Green Future!

Friday, August 21st, 2009

Steel buildings are often being touted as the future green buildings. This comes as a respite in these times, when the rising temperatures have almost become a threat against survival. The increasing amount of green house gases which is a major reason for global warming has led both developed as well as developing countries to stand up and work together towards a greener future.

Sustainable Development – development that “meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” – plays a crucial role. Steel buildings could be a small step in promulgating the sustainable development as steel being recyclable does not add to the non-biodegradable waste and also, in terms of energy, steel buildings are more energy efficient.

Steel Buildings in the Light of Sustainable Development:

Steel buildings are usually looked up to as an important step towards reaching the Triple Bottom Line (TBL or 3BL) which aims for people, planet and profit. One of the prime responsibilities of the private sector; sustainable development makes them more accountable towards society and environment.

It is often argued that it is difficult to attain cutting edge green development as it would be a difficult task for weak economies. Here, steel buildings justify themselves as it takes the burden off our precious forest cover which earlier bore the brunt of wood being the only resource for building. While the green cover remains intact, steel isn’t a threat for environment and do not hinder the economy’s growth and development.

Sustainable Development is the need of the hour and a way of being more responsible so as to give our future generations a greener tomorrow.

Steel Buildings Insulation – Various Types of Insulation

Friday, August 21st, 2009

Steel Buildings are known for the fact that these structures can be well-insulated and are better at temperature regulation as compared to wooden or conventional brick & mortar buildings. The insulation properties of any metal depends on its R-value. Higher the R-value, better the insulation. So, the best of the insulators are those with the highest R-value.

The varied types of insulation employed in steel buildings are as follows:

Batt Insulation: One of the most common types of insulation used in steel buildings, batts are pre-cut panels of insulation, available in varied lengths, widths and R-values such as a two-inch layer of fiberglass would have an R-value higher than a six-inch layer. Batt insulation is available with or without facing.

Rigid Foam Insulation: Another common type of steel buildings insulation, rigid foam insulation is made of either polyurethane or polystyrene. This type of insulation has a R-value ranging between 4 and 8 per inch and is usually used in reproofing work on flat roofs, on basement walls and as perimeter insulation.

Fiberglass Metal buildings Insulation: Composed of natural ingredients such as sand and recycled glass products, Fiberglass insulation acts as an effective insulator. Engineered to meet the unique requirements of each and every steel building, this type of insulation can be customized. Fiberglass Insulation proves to be more energy efficient and eco-friendly as opposed to its counterparts, thereby reducing the overall energy consumption.

Depending on your steel buildings’ specific needs and requirements, you may go for any of the aforementioned types of insulation for your establishment. However, a little research and knowledge will help you make a better decision and reap benefits. So, invest judiciously!
