Steel Skyscrapers – Altering the Skyline

Thursday, October 8th, 2009

Steel buildings changed the outlook of the United States, way back in 1885 when a ten-story Home Insurance Building was built in Chicago using the steel load-bearing frame. Considered to be the world’s first skyscraper, it represented one-of-its kind of architecture and construction procedure. Ever since, the United States has become home to the tallest of buildings.

Steel Structures all the way!

Presently, Chicago’s Willis Tower tops the list with 1,451 ft of height. Formerly, known as the Sears Tower, it is the highest point in Illinois. The fifth tallest freestanding steel skyscraper in the World, its design used nine steel-unit square tubes in a 3 tube by 3 tube arrangement. Willis tower was the first building to use such a design.

Next, stands at 1,362 ft the Trump International Hotel and Tower with 91 floors. Alternatively known as Trump Tower, the building gets its name from the real estate developer Donald Trump.
Although set to become the world’s tallest structure, the plans got revised after 9/11. The Trump Tower Chicago also got featured in the series Build It Bigger and is always a place of interest for film and television fraternity.

The list goes on till 115 with the least height as 50 ft. These steel metal skyscrapers became possible because of steel that has an ability of long spanning and the list proves the fact. These skyscrapers define the skyline for the country which has tallest of the freestanding buildings.

Steel Building Framing – A Plausible Alternative

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009

Steel Framing is integral to all steel structures. Residential steel framing usually utilizes cold-formed steel members for walls, roofs and/or floors. Steel framing is a cost-effective alternative to wooden framing. Steel, being manufactured under stringent conditions, possess a consistent strength, straightness and dimensionally stable members that in turn make it resistant enough to endure wind and earthquake loads.

Benefits of Steel Framing

  • Steel framing utilizes cold-formed steel which contains a minimum of 25% recycled steel. 100% recyclable steel produces minimal job site waste, thus, making the steel an environment-friendly construction material.
  • Steel Framed members follow the national standards and therefore, have a consistent material quality. Zinc-coated, steel framing is resistant to corrosion.
  • Steel-framed fabrications are energy-efficient provided they are properly insulated.
  • Steel is able to withstand unpredictable seismic events as well because steel, unlike other construction material has consistent attributes like thickness, width and other dimensional properties.
  • Steel framing utilizes screws for connections which provide for the mechanical locking and this in turn strengthens the steel structure.
  • The ease-of-implementation definitely makes their erection much more easy for the architects and construction engineers.

Though the initial cost might be a little higher as opposed to wooden framing but this extra-cost is worth bearing for considering the many benefits of steel framing.

All you Ever Wanted to Know About Steel Pole Barn Structures

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009

Steel buildings seem to have overpowered the entire construction world quite swiftly over the years. And there are no two ways about the fact that the various steel applications are equally gaining grounds with passing time.

One such structure that is believed to be extremely valuable and a plausible construction solution is steel pole barns. These steel structures are supported by poles. What makes them distinct from their contemporaries is the fact that there is no need of walls, floors or base.

Steel pole barn structures and essential details

Steel pole barn buildings encompass several aspects like sliding doors, covered porches, skylights, dutch doors and barn doors. Their construction differs and framing is applied horizontally to the poles in order to ensure that the structure stays hard. During the course of roof formation, shingles or galvanized steel can be used. Steel pole barns are hugely preferred as pre-fabricated these days. Prefabricated steel pole barn buildings are pre-welded and pre-drilled at the factory and save the owner on site and labor cost.

There are some significant materials used in the construction of steel pole barns like pressure treated lumber poles, walls made up of steel, concrete in order to attach the poles, stringers, purlin, galvanized steel or shingles for roofing, screws and nails, hand digger, electric drill, hammer and saw.

Steel Buildings – The New-age Way of Living!

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009

Steel, an alloy of iron and carbon is apparently one of the most versatile and preferred manufacturing and construction materials. Owing to the several qualities of steel, it has become a thing of our day-to-day life.

A steel spoon, a steel washing machine, a steel scalpel, a steel nail-cutter or a steel appliance – steel has an omnipotent kind of presence in our lives, though we don’t realize it very often. With the advent of new methods and techniques, the construction sector too has been innovating and the new-age living gets defined by modular prefabricated or pre-engineered steel fabrications.

Why Steel?

An oft-repeated question, steel has many benefits to suffice this argument. First and foremost, steel contributes to the sustainable development which is the need of the hour. Environment-friendly, steel structures do not contribute to the non-biodegradable waste as steel is recyclable and being more energy-efficient, these are cost-effective too. Steel buildings are slowly and steadily becoming the preferable way of living, for steel is sturdy and strong, is dimensionally stable and unlike other construction material does not shrink, warp and twist with time.

With new technology and architectural innovations, steel no longer remains the bland plain construction material rather offers multifarious new-options and designs. Easy-customization and portability of steel fabrications is another reason why they are being preferred by the architects and construction engineers. Steel has a high strength-to-weight ratio and this renders it the capability to span large distances.

Easy-to-erect, steel fabrications take lesser time for construction and are quite long-lasting as opposed to conventional style buildings.

Steel – A Few Things You Must Know!

Monday, October 5th, 2009

The construction world in the present scenario is brimming over with prefabricated steel buildings. Steel is being looked upon as one of the better construction materials as opposed to the conventional concrete and masonry. However, one must not ignore a few crucial things about steel because choosing the right material, is as important as design and other structural considerations. All this while, you might have been reading about the advantages of steel. Here, we shall give you a brief about few points that you must know before you choose steel as the construction material for your building.

Stress and Strain: The most essential things to keep in mind while using steel as a construction material are stress and strain. Vulnerable to stress and strain, one must be acquainted with the stress limits of steel, as stress beyond a limit creates permanent deformations. Although steel is strong enough for the purpose, but one should keep in mind the various factory procedures that include actions like cold-forming, welding and machining, that tend to alter the steel’s stress behavior. Stress and strain resistance usually define the steel grades. So, invest in a grade that can resist the various loads.

Strength and Stability:
Providing a steel structure with suitable stability is another important concern! Unlike concrete, it is usually the collapse of buckling that poses a threat to the integrity of a steel building. In addition to this, another important thing to be considered by the designers is how to provide a suitable degree of three-dimensional stability to the structure for which, the possible solutions can be rigid-frame action, truss action as with triangulation, with extra bracing elements like guys, struts, X-bracing etc.

Don’t forget, a better steel grade and a stable design makes a good investment for a durable and a long-lasting steel building! What is your take on this? Feel free to send in your feedback.
