Residential Steel Buildings – An Overview on Steel Sidings

Steel seems to be taking over with the advent of steel buildings. Conventionally, wood, brick or  stucco were the preferred choices for residential buildings’ sidings. However, over the years, they got replaced by other options like aluminum, vinyl etc. For almost decades, aluminum had been widely used and then later on vinyl sidings caught on the trend. Although aluminum and vinyl proved to be good enough for residential sidings but with the concept of green buildings on the scene, steel proves to be a better alternative.

If we compare all the three materials, steel is more greener. Before we elaborate on the greener aspect of steel, let us understand the meaning of ‘being greener’. Now, this actually refers to the building practices that involve lower consumption of energy and minimum waste disposal during construction. Steel buildings are touted as the future green buildings for the reason that, steel is recyclable and exhibits more greener traits that concerns environment.

Steel Sidings : Scoring Over the Conventional!

Coming to the reasons for steel sidings becoming more popular,

  • Steel sidings have lower embodied energy. Although in comparison to vinyl, steel rates higher.
  • Steel is more durable and easy-to-maintain as compared to vinyl or wooden sidings. Though vinyl is colored throughout, it is prone to damage under extreme cold weathers and can even buckle in excessive heat. Steel, on the other hand, seldom needs to be painted.

Residential steel sidings are suitable for any of the aforementioned materials, depending on the area they are being used for. Steel remains favorite amongst those who want robust steel buildings while vinyl or aluminum sidings are still in vogue for other reasons, mostly being region-specific.
