Eco-friendly Buildings - Truly Green Buildings

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

Eco-friendly buildings or Green buildings is the system of creating structures by using methods that are environmental friendly and are resource-efficient throughout a building’s life-cycle. Constructing Eco-friendly buildings is a friendly approach not only towards our environment but also towards our safe and secure life! Eco-friendly buildings are made from natural, non-toxic building materials and products that save the environment and also help in maintaining a good health as well.

And the best example of eco-friendly buildings is steel buildings. Steel is one most eco-friendly construction material available and the buildings constructed from ecologically sustainable material are least harmful to the environment.

Eco-friendly Buildings - Environmentally Sustainable Buildings

The term “Eco-friendly” is used to describe activities which are good for the environment. People today are not only becoming aware of the advantages of Eco-friendly steel buildings but are also adapting this approach of “going green” because Eco-friendly buildings are made from environmentally-friendly materials and are free from harmful chemicals and compounds.

Green, or sustainable, construction is a new approach for creating and using renewable and more resource-efficient models of construction, renovation, maintenance and demolition. Many people today are gladly adapting Eco-friendly building ideas in order to have a greener lifestyle and safe and sound health.

Time to Change the Nomenclature of Steel Buildings – Is Pre-engineered too Obsolete?

Friday, January 29th, 2010

A recent blog on metal buildings on Practical Environmentalist raised a very valid question. The blog was primarily on the energy efficiency of steel and metal buildings and passingly touched upon a relevant issue that whether the term pre-engineered used for (sometimes invariably) metal and steel buildings is appropriate or not?

The point that the article brought out was, since most of the steel metal buildings are appropriated and ‘engineered’ to customer’s needs and requirements calling them ‘pre-engineered’ is perhaps not the right nomenclature to follow. Now this further leads to a dilemma - what about the prefab warehouses or steel storage buildings that are bought as they are without any modifications? Aren’t these then pre-engineered to a certain level to dispense with the requirements of the user or the owner?

Back to square one, are we? Let’s discuss further and see if we reach a solution to this problem.

Pre-engineered or Prefab Metal Buildings – What’s in a name?

Now if it was up to Shakespeare then this one liner would have been sufficient to solve the problem. Come to think of it may very well be. When all you want from a steel building is a function (storage, commercial or residential), longevity, durability and stable standing, so what is in a name then? Nothing if you think but everything if you think again.

Classifying steel buildings on the basis of their method of construction is definitely logical. However, when the ways of construction are being modified, (almost every month.. too early, is it?) the nomenclature must keep up accordingly. So do we have a new one yet? Yes we do and it involves classifying and naming  steel buildings on the basis of their function rather than construction.

Metal buildings can then be hailed as commercial steel buildings, residential steel buildings and steel storage buildings, steel hangars, steel garages, etc. without limiting their functional or aesthetic potential. Now this may be a broad classification but it does not limit the scope of a steel building or what it can be used as. While being classified according to its function, a steel or metal building can still be a prefab building or a pre-engineered building. Should you want to know this? Well why not because the cost will depends on whether a building is pre-engineered or constructed on site.

Breaking out of a habit is difficult but breaking out of an obsolete convention isn’t. So break out and let steel buildings be much more than just plain structures.

Re-modeling Steel Buildings

Thursday, January 7th, 2010

We’ve been apprised of the advantages and benefits of steel buildings time and again. So we thought let’s see if already built steel buildings can be modified or not. They sure can be, with many steel buildings lasting up to more than half a century and even beyond, they can be re-designed, refurbished and reconstructed to the one that has found a place in your imagination. Remodeling steel buildings is quite common and can be undertaken much inconvenience.

Designs and aesthetics in architecture keep on evolving over a period of time, inevitably. Hence, it is more than natural that your steel building constructed say about 20-30 years ago feels out of place with so many latest steel skyscrapers (shall we add with mind blowing designs) surrounding yours. What do you do then? Sulk? Not at all, touch up your current steel building and redesign it with latest technology and the ‘in’ aesthetics.

Remodel, Recycle or Re-use – Versatility of Steel Buildings

The biggest advantage of steel buildings or metal buildings apart from being efficient storage solutions is their potential to be re-used, recycled or remodeled. One can easily take down a steel barn or a steel farm building and redesign it completely to build a modern (technically and not artistically) agriculture building with compartments or different sections.

Adding accessories to a steel building is another option. Adding solar panels, painting them with energy-efficient paints (manufactured specially for prefab steel buildings) not only enhances their external appearance but also increases their energy-efficiency manifold.

Let your steel buildings be the knight-in-shining-armor and not some plane solider among the urban jungle or rural buildings.  If you think it’s time go ahead and do it.

Should There be a Ban on Metal Buildings?

Monday, January 4th, 2010

A recent ban on metal buildings was imposed by a County Planning Commission (although taken back now…wisely). The all-out metal ban proposed by the county in question did spark off many a debate within the construction industry. Many constructors and businessmen confronted the idea and rightly criticized it. Hence we ask as well - Is banning metal or steel in construction really the answer to promote use of quality material use in buildings?

Steel buildings and metal buildings since their arrival have not only proved to be affordable solutions but have also advanced the scope of construction. Being relatively green, flexible and recyclable, steel or metal has revolutionized the construction industry. Therefore, proposing an all-out ban due to low quality and bland aesthetics of steel buildings is definitely not the answer to what can easily be said to skepticism.

Steel buildings and metal buildings may have certain disadvantages (which can be overcome with technology) but they are definitely not something the construction industry whether residential or commercial can do without.

Alternative to Metal Buildings – Quality Metal Buildings
The only alternative to metal buildings is superior quality metal or steel buildings. Improving upon something not working well with people is granted but completely wiping it out seems absurd. We cannot ignore the advantages and benefits that steel buildings provide. For many industries such as agricultural and low scope commercial enterprises, steel buildings have proved indispensable.

Improving on an area’s architecture is progressive but taking the exclusion principle route isn’t the best way to deal with the problem. The Eiffel tower has showed us how a metal building can bring the change in the world of construction. Letting such potential go out of our hands is perhaps one of the most unusual steps to take.

With construction industry advancing and incorporating many new developments, steel metal buildings cannot be kept out of it. What’s your take on it?

Essential Parts of a Pre engineered Steel Building

Friday, November 6th, 2009

Pre engineered steel buildings are now a part and parcel of the existing infrastructure and construction world. With their endless trail of advantages, their popularity seems to go even higher in the coming times!

Due to quick construction span, design flexibility, and customized construction options, steel buildings have almost created a furor in the construction circuit around the world. Steel building construction is perhaps, on its all-time high in the present times. The world is almost brimming over with prefabricated steel buildings that include agricultural steel buildings, commercial steel structures and residential steel buildings.

Steel buildings – Important architectural components

Steel buildings are usually prefabricated structures that are assembled on-site within a surprisingly limited time span. The various parts of a steel building are usually manufactured off-site, but are eventually delivered and assembled on-site.

The various parts of a steel building include:

  • Main frames – The steel frame of the building is undoubtedly, the most important components of a prefabricated steel building. It is fabricated with respect to the client’s needs and budget.
  • Panels and insulation -  These help the steel buildings and their inhabitants withstand the changing climatic conditions by providing suitable insulation.
  • Doors and windows – These help in providing proper ventilation to a steel building structure.
  • False ceilings – These are usually included in residential and commercial steel buildings.
  • Partitions – These form an integral part of any steel building structure. These are fixed to metal frame and suitably insulated.

These are a some of the pointers on essential parts of a steel building structure.

Quonset Steel Buildings vs Rigid Frame Pre-Engineered Steel Buildings

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009

Before you think of investing in any of the steel building configurations, it is always good to know about the various kinds and styles available on the market. Among the most contemplated steel structures, quonset and rigid frame pre-engineered steel buildings take the lead. These two steel buildings are the two main types available which have tremendously carved a niche in the construction circuit.

Arch style steel buildings are better known as quonset huts and are fabricated by utilizing group of integrated metal sections in order to metamorphose its characteristic form. They can be put to several applications like single enclosures, multi-vehicle enclosures and storage enclosures. Quonset steel buildings are very popular among people who are skilled do-it-yourselfers. They are doubtlessly economical, and can be up in no time, however there can be issues if external augmentations are required. These structures can accommodate windows and doors in the end walls but not to the side walls.

Quonset and Rigid frame steel buildings – A benchmark approach

Rigid frame prefabricated steel buildings can be put to a bevy of uses. One can add doors and windows to the end walls. These steel buildings employ commercial grade steel skeleton framework that makes them a well liked steel establishment. Expansion is possible and they are easier to set up as well.

It is always good to gauge the various styles and designs of steel configurations available on the market before making your final pick. It is never a good idea to make an outright decision and regret later.
