Get a Cold Formed Steel Frame for Your Steel Building

Saturday, February 12th, 2011

Steel Buildings are strong and more flexible form of man-made structures. The advantages of steel as a construction material are strength and ductility and also the strong holding power of the steel connectors.

Cold-formed steel framing is commonly used in the construction of steel buildings. It is a sheet steel formed into the shape of regular lumbar. The steel sheets are passed through the roller several times and finally formed into the shape of the required component. Since there is no heat used in the procedure, it is called cold formed. The cold – formed steel is more dense and has high tolerance making very solid steel buildings.

Use of cold-formed steel in the construction of the steel metal buildings is code compliant also. The various methods of cold-formed steel use are mentioned in sections R505 Steel Floor Framing, R603 Steel Wall Framing and R804 Steel Roof Framing of IRC (International Residential Code). These codes give the specifications on the prescriptive method of use of cold-formed steel in construction.

Advantages of Cold – Formed Steel Framing:

  • Steel framing lowers the construction cost of your steel building drastically.
  • Steel framing weighs 35-50% less, therefore leading to economical transportation.
  • Discounted insurance of the steel building.
  • Steel allows good indoor air quality as it emits less of volatile compounds.
  • Steel framing is more greener and 100% recyclable.
  • As a result of cold forming, this kind of steel possesses very high strength to weight ratio. This means better steel building designs.
  • Steel components made out of cold-formed steel are high on accuracy and reduce the overall erection time of your steel building.
  • Cold-formed steel is more dimensionally stable. Your steel building parts won’t undergo easy expansion and contraction due to weather.

Steel building construction requires a lot of thought into every aspect. However selecting the right kind of material is most important of all. For more information on steel metal buildings and free quotes on all steel requirements visit: http://www.citysteelbuildings.com/

Multi-Functional Metal Storage Sheds

Wednesday, February 9th, 2011

When we talk about a steel building for any purpose – commercial or residential, the first thing that comes to everyone’s mind is a storage shed. Steel sheds are the need of every working sector. Whether it’s your home or an industrial set up, metal sheds are required everywhere.

A metal shed is a storage space which can be utilized to store anything from household goods to heavy machinery and equipment. Metal storage sheds are strong and strenuous that are used  for extensive storage purposes. In different sectors, metal sheds have different uses :

Commercial sector – In a commercial sector, metal sheds are used to store the stock and other commodities. Retail stores use metal storage sheds to stock their yield that is to be sold everyday. Also, commercial sector utilizes a steel shed for many more purposes.

Residential sector – Metal sheds are of utmost utilization in a residential sector. Metal sheds are used to store the unused stuff in the house. Moreover, a metal storage shed is required to store the garden equipment, mechanical tools, bicycles, and other important things that you may not require in the present but are important and could be of use sometime later.

Industrial sector – Industrial sector metal sheds are of maximum functionality. These are used to store all the mechanical equipment, the raw material, the ready to dispatch stock, machinery etc. In the industrial sector, metal sheds can be substituted for a steel garage as well. Metal storage sheds also store heavy weight machinery and equipment required to handle the industrial machinery, serving the purpose of a workshop.

Agricultural sector – Metal sheds in agricultural and farming sector help safely shed the raw material and the yield from the fields. Storage sheds also shelter the equipment that is required in the fields. In agricultural sector, metal sheds shelter the cattle and the livestock as  well.

Steel Building Designs to Carry the Wind Load

Tuesday, February 8th, 2011

Steel metal buildings and steel components need to be designed in a way that they are able to withstand the wind load. The wind loads are code-specific and are determined depending on  some very important parameters.

The wind forces are almost static with very little dynamic effect on most of steel building structures. These are known as rigid steel structures. However, in case of steel buildings with slender frames, the dynamic effect of the wind forces increases which has to be accounted for in the design. These metal buildings and structures are known as flexible steel structures.

Wind speed of the area where you are going to setup your steel building quantifies the wind load the most. Besides, factors like  geographical location, physical location and the topography of the site, there are some structural factors that contribute to the wind load in a steel building. These are:

  • Dimensions: The dimensions of your steel building account heavily for the wind loads, specially the height. The wind velocity increases with the height.
  • Structural shape : The wind load on a steel metal building is a result of the distribution of the wind pressure on all the facades and is also effected by the wind moment around the entire structure and not just the front shape of steel building.
  • Adjacent structures : The surrounding structures and obstructions such as forest or hills also influence the wind load that your steel building will have to bear.
  • Roof pitch : Roof pitch means the inclination and the slope of the roof top. The steel building roofs with a very low pitch are prone to uplift or suction, while the steeper roofs experience downwards pressure.

Adjustments for Wind Sensitive Steel Buildings

The wind exerts more pressure on the smaller parts of steel metal building especially at the corners and around the obstructions, therefore the structural adjustments for the wind pressure should be made on the small parts of the metal buildings like the cladding units, rather than the whole structure. Steel structures such as high-rise buildings, steel towers and long steel bridges need more high end treatment like wind tunnel testing.

Find out the wind-load code your steel metal building falls in and design accordingly. For free quotes and further information visit: http://www.citysteelbuildings.com/

Build Steel Metal Building on a Strong Foundation

Monday, February 7th, 2011

Steel metal buildings require a foundation on which it can stand. The foundation anchors the columns of the steel buildings to the ground and therefore helps in making the whole structure very stable. Steel metal buildings most of the time require a strong concrete slab foundation but not all steel metal buildings require this kind of foundation. Some agricultural steel buildings are designed to have a dirt or a gravel ground therefore these require only concrete piers instead of a full concrete slab.

A steel building can do without a foundation but not all of them. If you are about to build a steel metal building make sure you learn all about foundations before getting started. Find out if your steel building  comes in the category which will easily be stable even without a foundation.

Setting up a foundation requires cost and engineering. You may just want to skip on the foundation due to the cost reason but having a steel building without a foundation has its own repercussions and cost too. It is very important to set the ground levels even or slanting as per the requirement of your building. Also if you are setting a concrete foundation you should set the pipes and the entire drainage system ahead than setting the foundation.

Floating Foundation for Steel Buildings in North

In northern climates, the concrete around the edge of the steel buildings has to extend deep enough to remain below the frost line in winters. This type of foundation is called floating foundation. The concrete slab expands in the summers and contracts in winters. To avoid any disruption in the foundation of the steel building the concrete around the edge forms a 2 feet deep and has a 4-millimeter thick sheet of plastic between the concrete and the gravel to keep the moisture out. This makes the foundation float on the soil, with the deeper concrete around the edge holding it in place.

Steel Metal Buildings – Types & Functionality

Sunday, February 6th, 2011

Steel metal buildings have different types and functionality. The most popular and common one is the Quonset hut prefabricated steel building which come first in the history of steel building construction. These are also known as Arch type steel buildings. Another type of steel building is Straight Wall building.

Both the straight wall and arch type of steel buildings are further classified as Clear and Multiple Span steel buildings. A Multiple Span steel building has additional interior supports whereas a Clear Span has no interior supports.

Quonset Hut Prefabricated Steel Buildings

The quonset hut prefabricated steel building is named after the site where it was first built; Quonset Point, Danisville, Rhode Island. These are provisional type of steel buildings and are usually very light weight. These are made out of galvanized steel and can be relocated and rebuilt anywhere without any need of extra cost or labor. These were originally used as military structures due to their easy structuring and mobility features. With time the pre-fabricated steel buildings have become very popular and have undergone many enhancements. These are the most accepted form of buildings now and reflect the modern architecture and engineering in every form.

Straight Wall Steel Buildings

Straight wall steel buildings are different from arch type steel buildings in the outlook of the building. The arch type building has a arch shaped roof, whereas the straight-walled steel building use large straight steel structures instead.

Use Clear span Steel Buildings for Reduced Cost

The span refers to the internal structure of the steel building. A Clear span steel building uses support beams overhead which spans over the width of the building. Therefore a clear span building does not require many support columns. This feature makes the clear span technique more cost-effective.

There are many areas in a steel building construction which can lead to lesser cost. Visit CitySteelBuildings.com, http://www.citysteelbuildings.com/ for more information and free quotes on steel metal buildings.

Insulation for Steel Metal Buildings

Friday, February 4th, 2011

Steel metal buildings need to be insulated to make them more weather friendly. Steel buildings allow heat to escape and also enter easily. Due to this easy exchange of heat with the outer environment, steel metal buildings are usually cold in winters and hot in summers. Insulation is  required for temperature, condensation and noise control of your steel building. Insulating your steel building may cost you high but there are some cheap insulation present and these come with a do-it-yourself tag which helps you save on your budget.

Steel building insulation cost depends on the type of insulation you use. Like if you use some foams, these are really cheap. The other cost factors are the method you use to install the insulation and the delivery charges. Fiberglass batting and spray on foam are the two most common method used and you can avoid the application cost by doing the insulation of your steel building yourself.

However, the large part of the total cost is the insulating material. The amount of material depends on the shape and size of your steel metal building and also on the weather of the area.

Steel Building Insulation – Types & Considerations

The various types of steel building insulation includes fiberglass insulation which comes in bates or blankets with a vapor barrier, foam insulation which is available in kit form, acoustical fire barrier insulation which makes your steel building fire-resistant. Insulation made out of recycled materials like denim, wool and plastics, cellulose insulation made out of recycled paper, wood shavings, sawdust and straw bale is resistant from rodents also.

Insulation can help you save in long term. When choosing the insulating material for your steel building weigh the benefits over the cost.

Steel Metal Buildings for all that you care! – Part I

Tuesday, February 1st, 2011

Steel buildings are being constructed widely today. One of the the usual concerns of a common man is to worry a lot when they are spending money on construction! Especially if the amount is huge and the structure too is huge, like a house. Structures become your lifelong assets and whatever amount you try to cut on, you end up spending a moolah most of the times!

This is because construction is not an easy and simple process today. In comparison with past years, it is very easy but the complexities related to the construction style, exteriors, interiors, designing etc. take a toll on the laborer, investor and the clock too!

What really mattered?

Earlier all that mattered was well shaped rooms and spacious walk doors. These days everything has to be styled and glamorized. And for all that you need a lot of money and a lot of time to keep a check on that money. Steel buildings take very less time for construction and are constructed at very less prices. These are definitely more affordable than concrete structures.

Let go off the biggest fear!

Also, steel buildings are not subject to single story constructions. These are multi-storied, going to a level that some of you will find hard to believe. Top 10 world’s tallest steel buildings include Empire State Building, The New York Times Tower, Willis Tower in Chicago and many other awesome structures. If they are standing tall and strong since past numerous years, then do you think you need to worry about your steel building? No, you don’t. Steel buildings are more robust than you think.
