Steel Building Strength is Assured with Metal Roofs

Monday, January 31st, 2011

As they say, strong foundation means a long lasting building. The same way installation of a metal roof means a strenuous steel building.

The strength of the steel metal building is assured with the installation of strong steel building components that includes a metal roof. Metal roofs can be installed in a concrete building as well. Many people already do that to add strength to their steel building by installing metal roofs in them.

Steel roofs are corrosion free and do not rust. Metal building insulation and painting make the steel surface rust proof and long lasting. The insulation techniques also help keep the interiors of your metal building warm in winters and cool in summers. Just the installation of metal roof can help you do that. A strong metal roof is like the protective layer of your building.

Install Metal Roofs in all kinds of buildings

When the roof of the metal building is strong, you don’t have to worry for the rest of the building in case of a disaster. In case of steel building, the roofing is installed with the entire building itself but in case of concrete buildings, you have to install the metal roofs separately and that is not a very cumbersome task.

Metal roofs depending upon the size of your building and the quality of metal you use are affordable and installation cost is not much either. Metal roofs keep you safe and sound in the building that you spend your life in.

Installing Steel Building Roofs

Sunday, September 20th, 2009

Steel buildings using metal roofs have an advantage. However much depends on how they are laid.  Metal roofs should be properly installed after choosing the right roofing products and details, it is sure to have a long-lasting endurance.

A few points one must keep in mind before installing metal roofs:

  • Clarity on Design: Clarity of design is imperative. One must avoid cluttering the metal construction with too many penetrations. A jungle of pipes and ducts may lead to issues like exposure of metal to corrosion and consequentially to leakage. So, it is better to avoid penetrations.
  • Choosing the Right Roof: So, what kind of metal roof does your metal building need? Make sure you take everything into consideration (Read weather, hurricane resistance, hail resistance etc) before finalizing the product, for example – if your metal fabrication stands in an area where hailstorms are a common thing then you must avoid snap-on types of roofing. Although all seam designs in roofs are somewhat vulnerable but the snap-ons perform the worst.
  • Avoiding the Formation of Ice Dams: Ice dams or precisely the accumulation of ice and snow is usually a result of warm roofs and cold eaves. It is better to avoid both as this might lead to leakage and produce local depressions. To avoid such risks, one might go for waterproof panel design rather than the water-shedding one.
  • Installing the Metal Roof the Right Way: Installation counts as much importance as the proper design and roofing elements. Sometimes it is not the error in design but the improper attachment that leads to wind-related roof losses.

So next time you plan a metal roof for your metal building or steel building do not neglect the installing procedure.

Metal Roofing for Homes – Now is the Time!

Monday, August 24th, 2009

Steel buildings have evolved out to be big winners in the recent times. Steel roofs, useful building accessories, have also been a hot topic among investors for quite a while now. People are waking up to the various benefits of metal roofs and showing inclination toward them.

Credited for their sustainable and versatile character, steel roofing definitely is proving out to be the order of the day. There is an upsurge in demand for metal roofing installation as they are light, strong, durable and non-combustible.

Steel roofs – They are here to stay

The fact that they are sustainable, recyclable and are available in various shapes, styles and colors make steel roof systems all the more popular among residential building owners. Residential metal building roofs do not crack, shrink, or react to the climatic effects/changes. They are light weight and hence are portable. You can save your power bills tremendously because these roofs are energy-efficient.

Another striking feature that makes steel roofs one of the most sought-after roofing systems is that they are fire-resistant. They can easily withstand tropical storms and crude hurricanes. Steel roofs are labor efficient since they can be installed over the existing roof. As compared to their counterparts, metal roofs can last for 50-100 years depending upon the level of maintenance carried out by the owner. Metal roofs can be used for conventional residential buildings as well.  Contrary to the common misconceptions, metal and steel roofs are installed over conventional buildings also and not just metal or steel buildings.

What are you waiting for? If you had been waiting for the right option of roofs to come along your way, here’s the perfect choice. Metal roofing, yes it is!

Is your Metal Building Roof Leaking?

Sunday, August 23rd, 2009

Metal or steel buildings roofs are directly exposed to the scorching heat and other vagaries of weather and climate, leaving them damaged quite easily. Getting a metal roof repaired can be troublesome if not handled in time. Fixing the leak right away is the best deal and the task begins with finding the inconspicuous source for the leak in the steel building roof.

In order to find the leak, you need to closely inspect your roof. Do not leave the areas that need utmost attention like the J-rail, the flashing around vents, pipes and skylights, the seams, rumble-buttons and the roof sealant.

How to patch the leak?

Once you’ve spotted the hole responsible for the leak, you shall need the following tools & materials:

  • a piece of galvanized metal
  • sheet metal screws
  • butyl tape
  • roof coating
  • caulk
  • flexibility putty knife

Remember that roof is an essential part of steel buildings and its maintenance is as significant as any other part of a metal building, may be more.

Following are certain steps that you should take note of in order to repair your metal building roof.

Steps to patch the hole:

  1. Clean the area scrapping off flakes or loosen the metal roof coating with flexible putty knife.
  2. Apply the butyl tape to the perimeter of the area that needs to be patched up.
  3. Cut a patch out of galvanized metal overlapping the hole, exactly above the butyl tape
  4. Pre-drill holes in the galvanized metal. Make sure, you don’t drill the trusses and to start with, you can place the screw every two inches and if it’s not tight enough, put a screw every one inch.
  5. Finally seal around the edges of the patch and the screws with caulk.
  6. When the caulk dries, cover it up with a roof coating.

Fixing up the leak as soon as you spot one is quite essential because if you don’t do that it might affect the the other aspects of your steel building like insulation. So, fix up your roof right away if you think it has a hole, starting with the close inspection of the metal building roof.
