Metal Buildings and Earthquakes

Friday, October 30th, 2009

Metal buildings occupy an integral position in areas that are liable to frequent earthquakes and other such natural calamities. Metal buildings have been found to be much more efficient in  surviving an earthquake in comparison to their counterparts that include brick, stone and wooden buildings. They handle earthquakes in a manner that is slightly better than the conventional buildings.

However, it would be wrong to believe that all metal buildings are capable of withstanding earthquakes. The capacity of a metal building to withstand an earthquake depends upon its ductility. Ductility of a prefabricated metal building plays an important role in its ability to resist an  earthquake.

Prefab metal buildings – Safe bets for earthquakes!

Prefab metal buildings
offer adequate resistance to the aftermaths of earthquakes. Like traditional buildings, they usually do not collapse or succumb to the miseries of natural calamities. One of the most efficient and commonly used construction material for this purpose is steel rebar.

Steel rebar has high ductility that helps it a great deal in absorbing an earthquake. It bends and flexes without breaking, thereby protecting the metal steel building from the clutches of destruction and devastation. Besides using steel rebar as a construction material, employing the right technique of construction and assemblage also plays a distinct role in making a prefabricated steel building resistant to earthquakes, to a certain extent.

Send in your steel building queries and suggestions. We would be happy to hear!

Steel Buildings – The Changing Facets!

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

Steel buildings have undergone a complete makeover since their introduction. Needless to say, this transformation is not just restricted to their structure or shape but has traveled down to functionality, utility and cutting-edge technology. Steel buildings are no more mere architectural structures devoid of the finesse and charisma of their conventional counterparts.

Prefabricated steel buildings have lived up to our expectations, and continue to challenge our thirst for imagination. Steel buildings can be suitably customized to meet our desirable architectural and functional needs. The construction and infrastructure industry in the present scenario, is brimming over with new and inventive ideas, courtesy the architectural innovations offered by steel buildings.

Steel buildings – No dearth of innovation!

The ever multiplying range of options available for the customization of steel buildings is a significant contributor in their soaring popularity. Steel buildings are giving a tough competition to the brick and wooden buildings in terms of design functionality. Brick facades, linear panels, shutters and colored paints are some of the options that help improving the external appeal of prefabricated steel buildings.

In addition to these, insulation systems, sky lights, service and overhead doors, and portable foundations are some of the accessories that help customizing steel buildings according to the dweller’s needs and aspirations. All-in-all, one can say that steel building builders and designers are leaving no stone unturned in making our steel building experience, a long-lasting and enriching one!

Steel Buildings Foundations – Basics you Need to Know

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

Every steel building needs a foundation for supporting its weight and therefore, foundations are certainly inevitable for any steel structure, as they provide for the flat and leveled base.

In fact a strong foundation is integral to any prefabricated metal building for longer durability and resistance. The foundation usually depends on the kind of steel building one is constructing. Like agricultural steel buildings usually demand a dirt or gravel floor and hence, consequently use concrete piers instead of a full slab. However, mostly a concrete slab is best for all kinds of steel buildings, be it commercial, industrial, residential or institutional.

Steel Building Foundations: Importance and Types

The groundwork for any foundation includes excavation procedures, drainage practices, concrete proportioning etc for which a local, professional foundation engineer can be hired. Foundations are significant for all steel buildings as they make the actual erection of the steel building a lot more easier and smoother. Nonetheless, it also ensures that the design is properly supported.

It is significant to assess the soil conditions before a foundation is laid and any experienced engineer shall undertake the exercise without giving a much thought or taking it as an unnecessary examination. It is important to know the soil conditions as soil influences the tenacity of a foundation, which further reflects on the endurance of steel buildings.

There are basically two types of foundations:

Floating Foundations (or slabs) and Pier – It includes a monolithic poured concrete slab

Footing or Grade beam Foundations – It consists of a square, round or rectangular footing.

The type of foundation one can opt for, needs to be checked with the local building codes and specifications. Steel buildings with strong foundations have longer lifespans and are more effective against combating earthquakes or other natural calamities.
