Steel Buildings and the Environment

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

There are many benefits of building with steel, particularly for the environment. Steel buildings have many advantages when it comes to the needs of sustainable development.

Steel buildings also require less material than other conventional buildings, enable lighter buildings and more light leading to less energy consumption. Steel is produced from iron, which is one of the most common elements on the planet. Steel production and processing itself is environmentally friendly.

Steel for Stronger Buildings and Better Environment

Steel is durable, and requires little maintenance, which means that corrosion and the use of metallic coatings on steel buildings, that may damage the environment, are not needed. Steel also happens to be the most recycled material in the world, and prefab  steel buildings are deconstructed and recycled when they are no longer used. Steel is clean and dry, free of detriment (such as noise, dust, storage requirements, etc.) to the local environment.

These are important considerations today, and City Steel Buildings can help you with information on all types of steel buildings and offers free steel building quotes.

Steel Buildings – The New-age Way of Living!

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009

Steel, an alloy of iron and carbon is apparently one of the most versatile and preferred manufacturing and construction materials. Owing to the several qualities of steel, it has become a thing of our day-to-day life.

A steel spoon, a steel washing machine, a steel scalpel, a steel nail-cutter or a steel appliance – steel has an omnipotent kind of presence in our lives, though we don’t realize it very often. With the advent of new methods and techniques, the construction sector too has been innovating and the new-age living gets defined by modular prefabricated or pre-engineered steel fabrications.

Why Steel?

An oft-repeated question, steel has many benefits to suffice this argument. First and foremost, steel contributes to the sustainable development which is the need of the hour. Environment-friendly, steel structures do not contribute to the non-biodegradable waste as steel is recyclable and being more energy-efficient, these are cost-effective too. Steel buildings are slowly and steadily becoming the preferable way of living, for steel is sturdy and strong, is dimensionally stable and unlike other construction material does not shrink, warp and twist with time.

With new technology and architectural innovations, steel no longer remains the bland plain construction material rather offers multifarious new-options and designs. Easy-customization and portability of steel fabrications is another reason why they are being preferred by the architects and construction engineers. Steel has a high strength-to-weight ratio and this renders it the capability to span large distances.

Easy-to-erect, steel fabrications take lesser time for construction and are quite long-lasting as opposed to conventional style buildings.

Steel – A Few Things You Must Know!

Monday, October 5th, 2009

The construction world in the present scenario is brimming over with prefabricated steel buildings. Steel is being looked upon as one of the better construction materials as opposed to the conventional concrete and masonry. However, one must not ignore a few crucial things about steel because choosing the right material, is as important as design and other structural considerations. All this while, you might have been reading about the advantages of steel. Here, we shall give you a brief about few points that you must know before you choose steel as the construction material for your building.

Stress and Strain: The most essential things to keep in mind while using steel as a construction material are stress and strain. Vulnerable to stress and strain, one must be acquainted with the stress limits of steel, as stress beyond a limit creates permanent deformations. Although steel is strong enough for the purpose, but one should keep in mind the various factory procedures that include actions like cold-forming, welding and machining, that tend to alter the steel’s stress behavior. Stress and strain resistance usually define the steel grades. So, invest in a grade that can resist the various loads.

Strength and Stability:
Providing a steel structure with suitable stability is another important concern! Unlike concrete, it is usually the collapse of buckling that poses a threat to the integrity of a steel building. In addition to this, another important thing to be considered by the designers is how to provide a suitable degree of three-dimensional stability to the structure for which, the possible solutions can be rigid-frame action, truss action as with triangulation, with extra bracing elements like guys, struts, X-bracing etc.

Don’t forget, a better steel grade and a stable design makes a good investment for a durable and a long-lasting steel building! What is your take on this? Feel free to send in your feedback.

Hyundai Steel Collaborates with BHP Billiton for Iron Ore Supply Deal

Sunday, September 13th, 2009

Hyundai Steel, one of the prominent steel-makers in South Korea, recently signed eight-year iron ore supply deal with BHP Billiton, the second largest mining company of the world. As per the agreement, BHP Billiton would be delivering 22 million tonnes of iron ore within a time span of 2009-2017.

The deal has probably seen the light of the day after Billiton’s prime competitor, Rio Tinto employed a 33-per cent price cut in its recent annual contract price with Nippon Steel Corp of Japan and, Posco of South Korea, in comparison to the previous year’s price.

The speculations are rife that Billiton has yet not disclosed the price agreed to in the contractual agreement.

Nevertheless, this collaboration is expected to bring about a constructive transformation in the future of steel building construction all through the globe!

Definitely something to look forward to in the future of steel buildings construction.

Steel Frame Buildings for Mold-resistance

Wednesday, September 9th, 2009

Steel frame buildings offer a part solution for the mold nuisance which leads to serious health problems. The part solution to the problem lies in the problem itself. For combating molds nuisance, one needs to arrest the growth of molds in the buildings.

Let us have a look at the conditions which actually promote the growth of molds. Primarily, mold grows and replicates in damp and moist areas that provide for its nutrition. In fact, it has been observed that mold spores are quite rampant in air and upon availability of optimum conditions (read moisture and dampness), they grow rapidly.

Factors Responsible for Mold Growth:

Recent strategies and innovations, though beneficial, have a somewhat lopsided purview in terms of perfect habitations. A few factors that contribute towards the growth of mold are:

  • The latest energy saving trend has added to the moisture levels in terms of relative humidity of the building.
  • Tightening up the spaces for cost and energy-effectiveness also contribute towards moisture levels.
  • Apart from the aforementioned architectural modifications, simple leaky buildings or less maintained buildings also invite for molds.

In this regard, steel buildings could be treated as a part solution to the problem as they mitigate the growth of molds. Cold-formed steel structures are dimensionally straight and are screwed which means no leaks. Also, steel does not provide food for the growth of molds and the moisture does not get into steel studs.

As the construction industry grows and innovates more, we would have more and more of relevant inputs here for your steel building. Keep checking the space for more.

Tuesday, September 8th, 2009

The Black Day in the history of the world is about to mark its eighth anniversary. The collapse of the colossal Twin Towers of the World Trade Center shattered millions of hearts, and wreaked havoc in about a million plus families in almost all the corners of the world!

Though the world is trying to cope with the aftermath of one of the most disastrous terrorist attacks in the history of mankind, the dark images of the fateful day of September 11, 2001 still haunt countless minds. As the world embarks on its journey forward, a budding campaign under the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, is on its way to promote the reuse of the World Trade Center steel debris.

The campaign is aimed at engineering memorials for commemorating the World Trade Center attacks. The mammoth size wreckage is presently lying in an 80,000 square-foot hangar, Hangar 17 at the Kennedy International Airport and is awaiting its distribution and subsequent reuse. Applications are being received at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey in considerable numbers.

Isn’t it an incredible way of putting the remnants of a memorable steel structure to some real good use? Memorials made of steel would be a perfect way to make the memories of WTC attacks eternal and not let it get lost in the apathetic persistence of time.

Steel Buildings – Issues and Solutions

Thursday, August 27th, 2009

Steel buildings, undoubtedly, score over conventional structures but there are certain important points that one must remember before going in for a steel fabrication. These are important to be addressed as they determine the lifespan and durability of your steel building.

Following are certain areas of concerns and their remedies:

  • Corrosion - Being susceptible to corrosion, steel needs to be painted periodically. However, weathering steel could be an answer to corrosion but the use of this is not feasible at times; then under such circumstances, timely maintenance becomes a-must.
  • Fireproofing -  Although the steel members are incombustible but their strength is greatly reduced during disastrous fires. Therefore, it is important to protect the steel frame of a building by the materials that has certain insulating properties. Alternatively, a sprinkler system can also be installed for combating fires.
  • Buckling – Buckling usually occurs when the structural member is subjected to high compressive stress that the material is incapable of withstanding.  Use of an additional steel can save it from buckling.
  • Fatigue – Steel is susceptible to fatigue, the progressive and localized structural damage that occurs when a material is subjected to cyclic loading. Here, the dependable design helps to keep the stress below the threshold of fatigue limit.
  • Fracture – Another material defect, fracture also occurs under stress concentration. To avoid such structural failures, it is important to assess the material on the basis of fracture toughness. The detailed study is known as fracture mechanics, that is quite relevant to the erection of steel buildings.

The discussed problems do spell disaster but can definitely determine snowball into a predicament of the steel building if not taken care of.
